Breast Augmentation – Implants

BREAST AUGMENTATION – BREAST IMPLANTS – BREAST ENLARGEMENT

  • Breast augmentation involves the surgical placement of breast implants to increase breast size and improve breast shape.
  • There are two types of breast implants: saline and silicone.
  • The procedure can be performed through various incision options, including periareolar, inframammary, and transaxillary.
  • The size, shape, and type of implant used will be discussed and decided during a consultation with a plastic surgeon.
  • The surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia, and typically takes one to two hours.
  • Recovery time after breast augmentation varies, but most patients can return to work within a week and resume normal activities within a few weeks.
  • Complications from breast augmentation are rare, but can include infection, capsular contracture, and implant ruptures.
  • Patients should follow their surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully to reduce the risk of complications.
  • Breast implants may need to be replaced or removed in the future, and regular follow-up appointments with a surgeon are necessary.
  • Breast augmentation can provide improved self-confidence, a more proportionate figure, and a boost to overall body image.

TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS

Breast implants are classified into two main types: silicone and saline.

Silicone implants have a silicone gel filling, while saline implants have a sterile saltwater filling. Both types have different feels and pros and cons, and the best option depends on individual needs and preferences.

BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE

  • Anesthesia administration
  • Incision placement, typically in the crease under the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit
  • Placement of the implant, either behind the muscle or directly behind the breast tissue
  • Closing of incisions
  • Placement of a bandage or surgical bra to support the breasts during healing.

INCISION FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION

There are three common incisions for breast augmentation: Inframammary, Periareolar, and Transaxillary.

The Inframammary incision is made in the crease where the breast meets the chest. This incision allows for direct access to the breast tissue, giving the surgeon more control over the placement of the implant. The scar is typically well-hidden in the natural crease, and healing is often quicker with this type of incision.

The Periareolar incision is made along the border of the areola, the dark skin surrounding the nipple. This incision can result in less scarring and is often a good option for those who have smaller areolas or need to have their nipples repositioned.

The Transaxillary incision is made in the armpit and is used to insert the implant into the breast pocket without any visible scarring on the breast itself. However, this incision can be more difficult to control and may result in asymmetrical placement of the implants.

RECOVERY AFTER BREAST IMPLANT SURGERY

  • Rest and limited physical activity for a few days to a week
  • Pain, swelling, and bruising are common and will subside over time
  • Wearing a support bra 24/7 for a few weeks after surgery to aid healing
  • Avoiding heavy lifting and intense exercise for a few weeks
  • Following all post-operative care instructions from the surgeon
  • Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon to monitor healing progress.

COMPLICATIONS AFTER BREAST SURGERY

  • Infection: Although rare, a breast implant infection can occur and may cause redness, swelling, and pain in the affected area.
  • Capsular Contracture: This occurs when the scar tissue surrounding the implant tightens, causing discomfort and altering the appearance of the breast.
  • Implant Rupture: A tear in the implant shell can cause leakage of the contents into the surrounding tissue, potentially leading to other complications.
  • Implant Rippling: Visible rippling or wrinkling of the implant can occur, particularly in women with thin tissue or those who have had saline implants.
