LABIAPLASTY

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to alter the appearance of the labia minora or labia majora, the inner and outer vaginal lips. It’s done for cosmetic or functional reasons, such as reducing discomfort or pain during physical activity. The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia and takes one to two hours to complete. Recovery time is usually 4-6 weeks, during which sexual activity and strenuous exercise should be avoided.

LABIAPLASTY – TYPES OF PROCEDURES

There are two main types of labiaplasty procedures:

Labia Minora Reduction: This procedure involves reducing the size of the labia minora, which are the inner vaginal lips.

    • Labia Minora Reduction: This procedure involves reducing the size of the labia minora, which are the inner vaginal lips.

What Causes the Excess Labial Tissue?

The exact cause of excess labial tissue is not fully understood, but some factors that can contribute to the development of enlarged labia minora include:

  • Genetics: Some women are born with naturally large labia, which can become more pronounced with age or hormonal changes.
  • Childbirth: Pregnancy, childbirth, and hormonal changes can cause the labia to stretch and become elongated.
  • Aging: The labia can become elongated or saggy as a result of aging and the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin.
  • Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances, such as those that occur during menopause, can lead to changes in the labia.
  • Chronic irritation or rubbing: Constant irritation or rubbing of the labia, such as from tight clothing or frequent cycling, can cause it to enlarge.
  • Trauma: Injuries to the genital area can cause damage to the labia and result in enlargement.

It is important to note that labia minora size and shape can vary greatly from woman to woman, and there is no “normal” or “correct” appearance for the labia. Women who are concerned about the appearance of their labia should consult with a healthcare provider for an evaluation and to discuss their options.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE?

Labiaplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia, although some patients may choose to have the procedure done under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the excess labial tissue will be trimmed or reshaped to the desired size and shape. This can be done using a scalpel, laser, or radiofrequency device. The length of the procedure will vary depending on the extent of the reshaping, but it typically takes between 30 minutes and two hours.

After the procedure, the patient may experience some pain, swelling, and bleeding. Pain medication can be prescribed to manage discomfort. It is common to experience some sensitivity or numbness in the treated area, but these symptoms should subside over time. The patient may be required to wear a special dressing or garment for a few days to help reduce swelling. Full recovery can take several weeks, and strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks after the procedure. The patient should also avoid sexual activity for several weeks to allow for proper healing.
